    Fridays at 12:30-1:30 starting in October and November, walk with us from the Redmond Senior Center to Blacksmith down 4th St. This is an easy 1.15 mile walk round trip with 2 rest spots along the way. It is a flat, low traffic area, and no one walks alone. All abilities and ages are welcome. We'll have staff from both the Redmond Senior Center and Deschutes Public Library so you can hear about all the upcoming news at both locations.

    Explore the night sky and solar system in a planetarium!

    This is an in-person program. Registration is required. This program is recommended for children ages 7 and up, and all children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

    Join the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory for an interpreter-led tour of the solar system in their inflatable planetarium! Together we will explore the constellations visible in our night sky, and then blast off and learn about the planets of our solar system.

    Registered participants will be divided into two groups: one group will be able to explore self-guided activities provided by Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory, while the other group will embark on the half-hour planetarium exploration. Then these groups will have the opportunity to switch.

    The mission of Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory is to inspire present and future generations to cherish and understand our natural world.

    Enjoy the annular solar eclipse on the library's lawn.

    Join us for doughnuts and eclipse viewing. An annular eclipse of the sun is one in which the edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon. The eclipse will start at 8:05 am, and begin its annular phase at 9:18.

    Limited free solar viewing glasses will be available at this event on a first come, first served basis. It is not safe to view the solar eclipse with sunglasses or the naked eye.

    Decorate sugar skulls and learn about the Day of the Dead.

    Decorate your own spooky or beautiful calaveras for Dia de los Muertos. The tradition of making sugar skulls can be traced back over 3,000 years in Mexico. Traditionally, families would go to their loved ones' graves at midnight on October 31 and place both large and small handmade sugar skulls there as an offering.

    Come learn some Guinean dance moves!

    This is an in-person program. This program is recommended for children ages 6 and up, but open to all levels and ages. All children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

    Come dance with West African Dancer Fodé Sylla and learn some basic traditional movements of Guinean dance.

    Fodé Sylla is a dynamic acrobat, drummer, dancer and performance artist from Conakry, Guinea. He teaches drumming, dance, and acrobatics to students of all ages and skill levels. He recently taught in France and was on tour with a circus in New York. He teaches traditional African Dance regularly at University of Oregon in Eugene and for Eugene City Parks and Recreation. He has performed and taught at the Bend Juneteenth Celebration, Oregon Country Fair, The Elliott Institute, and Seattle Rhythm Festival, to name a few. He is a popular teacher with a big following of students.

Ghosts of authors passed including Philip K. Dick, Beverly Cleary, Edgar Allan Poe, and more will be stationed throughout the library to tell you more about their works! Be careful as you walk through the stacks though - spooky scares may lie around any corner!
