Classes at the Library

The Deschutes Public Library offers free, hands on computer classes on variety of topics. Class size and topics vary based on library facilities and community demand.

In addition to formal classes, the library offers open computer labs where community members can drop in to ask specific technology questions or practice computer skills.

    Join Deschutes Public Library’s first learning circle and discover your family’s history. Genealogy is one of the most difficult types of research you can undertake, but it is also the most fascinating because it's all about you! If you're considering researching your own family tree, but don't know where to begin, join this fun and casual learning circle to get started.

    Learning circles are free, peer-led study groups for learners who want to take online courses together in a public space. This circle will follow the Genealogy Basics class offered through Gale Courses, an online learning platform accessed with your library card.

    Two lectures are posted each week with suggested assignments. Learning circle participants will meet once a week to discuss the lectures and share insights and feedback on the assignments.

    The Learning Circle will meet on Tuesdays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 22, from 12-1pm in the Meyer Classroom. Participants will need a DPL library card to register.

    Get familiar with spreadsheets.

    Spreadsheets are excellent tools for the organization, analysis and storage of data in tabular form. Proficiency in spreadsheet skills is beneficial for both personal and professional reasons and this class is designed as an introduction for the absolute beginner.

    Participants will get an overview of Microsoft Excel, the most popular spreadsheet program, and learn how to enter and edit data, add and delete rows and columns and sort data by creating a simple address book.

    This is a hands-on, interactive class. Participants should be comfortable using a mouse and internet browser. The library has laptops available or you can bring your own. Space is limited and registration is requested.

    Introduction to Finding Grants will provide an overview of the funding research process for nonprofits seeking grants from foundations, corporations, and grantmaking public charities. Participants will learn tips on how best to identify funding sources for nonprofit organizations, highlighting the electronic and print resources available for free at Deschutes Public Library. This workshop will include a demonstration of Foundation Directory Online, Foundation Center's premiere searchable database that provides information on more than 140,000 grantmakers and over 5 million grant records.
