Limited notary public services are available for free on a drop-in basis at Deschutes Public Library. Notaries volunteer their time, and upcoming dates and locations are listed below.

The notary will sign up to two documents per appointment. This service is not intended for commercial businesses.

A notary public is a state official who verifies the identity of the signer or signers. Notaries are not licensed to practice law and are not allowed to draft legal records or give advice on legal matters, including immigration.

What to Bring:

  • All correctly filled-out, but unsigned documents. Documents must be signed in front of the notary.
  • Current signed photo identification (such as: driver's license, passport, U.S. military ID card, or ID card issued by federally recognized Indian Tribe) for all parties involved OR a friend with such ID to vouch for requestor's identity.
  • Any required witness or witnesses. Witnesses must be known to the signor, be over 18-years-old, and cannot have a beneficial interest in the documents being signed. Witnesses must also have valid, government-issued photo identification.

Limitations:

  • Services are limited to two documents per person per appointment.
  • Services are not available for commercial businesses.
  • Notary cannot sign documents in languages they do not understand.
  • Notary and the requester must be able to communicate directly with each other; translators are not permitted.
  • Birth Certificates, Death Certificates and Marriage Certificates cannot be photocopied and notarized.

Notaries reserve the right to decline service if the document(s), identification, or circumstances of the request for notary service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, or doubt.
