3D Printing FAQ

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created.
Use of the MakerSpace 3D printers is free.
There is a menu of items to choose from in the MakerSpace. You may choose to print a custom design or choose a design from a variety of 3D model databases such as Printables.com. The design must be reviewed by a staff member or volunteer to ensure it is within the print limitations of the 3D printer.
3D printers use a thermoplastic material called filament. The MakerSpace exclusively uses Polylactic acid (PLA) filament which we provide for prints. PLA is not food safe. Customers must use the filament provided.
No, you may only use library provided PLA filament.
An STL file is the most common and best type of file to use for 3D printing models.
The printer's maximum build volume is 9.84 in x 8.3 in x 8.6 in (250 mm x 210 mm x 220 mm). All prints must fit within this volume or be altered to fit.
Print duration varies based on print size, design level of detail and overall complexity. Small to medium size prints will often take 1-3 hours to print.
Yes, you must be present for the duration of the print.
3D prints are subject to failure due to a large number of factors. MakerSpace staff do their best to prevent failed prints but cannot guarantee success. DPL assumes no responsibility for failed prints. The customer is responsible for monitoring the print for the duration of the printing process.
Yes. You may use library computers to design a 3D model using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Tinkercad is a free, web-based program designed to help people getting started with CAD. You can make a design and export it as an STL file for 3D printing.
Yes. The MakerSpace stocks a variety of filament colors. Specific filament color availability is not guaranteed.
The Prusa MK4 printers in the MakerSpace support single color printing only.
