Welcome to the Deschutes Public Library MakerSpaces— creative hubs for innovators, tinkerers, and lifelong learners of all ages! Designed to inspire curiosity and hands-on exploration, our MakerSpaces offer a welcoming environment where families, kids, teens, adults, and all community members can come together to imagine, invent, and make. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced creator, our flexible MakerSpaces are equipped with tools, equipment, and expert staff to guide you in turning your ideas into reality.

About DPL MakerSpaces

DPL MakerSpaces offer a range of the latest technology and tools to help you bring your projects to life. Explore options like 3D printers, button makers, craft kits, and more. Whether you're working individually or as part of a group, our knowledgeable staff and volunteers are here to support you every step of the way.

The first DPL MakerSpace opened in the Redmond Library in January 2025. We invite you to stop by and explore! As we continue to grow, an additional MakerSpace will open at the Central Library at Stevens Ranch, which will open in late spring 2026. Explore

Drop in during open hours to try out our tools and equipment at your own pace. The MakerSpace is open for self-guided exploration, browse craft supplies, experiment with the button maker, use the laminator, or start a new project. No reservation needed for All Access equipment.

Learn

Build new skills through hands-on workshops, classes, and training sessions led by MakerSpace staff. From sewing basics to 3D printing fundamentals, our programs are designed for all skill levels. Check our Upcoming Events calendar for the latest schedule of classes and workshops.

Gather

Connect with fellow makers and your community in a collaborative space. The MakerSpace is a place to share ideas, work on group projects, and find inspiration from others. Whether you're crafting solo or meeting up with friends, you're welcome to make it your creative home.

Using the MakerSpace

The MakerSpace hosts a mix of equipment that the community is welcome to use. We highly encourage the safe use of our Makerspace equipment. Due to safety, space, and availability limitations, some equipment may be available on a reservation basis only; see below for a complete listing of equipment for each MakerSpace.

All ages are welcome in the MakerSpace; children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult caregiver while in the MakerSpace.
The use of a Library MakerSpace is free of charge except in the event of damage or disrepair.
To help keep the MakerSpace safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone, visitors are asked to tidy up after their visit.
Visitors are expected to adhere to our policies when using the MakerSpaces. Violations of these policies may result in the loss of access privileges.

These are Exploring Hours — drop in to use All Access equipment on a first-come, first-served basis.

All Access

Our MakerSpace All Access collection includes equipment and supplies available for use during open hours. Items are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and supplies may be limited.

Training Required

The following items require training prior to use. Customers must be 17 or older and hold a valid Deschutes Public Library card to schedule a training appointment with a MakerSpace staff member. Once training is complete, equipment is available for customers to use during Exploring hours on a first-come, first-served basis. A separate training appointment must be booked for each piece of equipment.

Before reserving equipment, customers must schedule and attend a training appointment specific to that piece of equipment.

3D Printing

The Redmond Library MakerSpace hosts the Prusa MK4 3D printer. PrusaSlicer is the software utilized to slice (or convert) files into a machine-ready print file.

3D Printing FAQ

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created.
Use of the MakerSpace 3D printers is free.
There is a menu of items to choose from in the MakerSpace. You may choose to print a custom design or choose a design from a variety of 3D model databases such as Printables.com. The design must be reviewed by a staff member or volunteer to ensure it is within the print limitations of the 3D printer.
3D printers use a thermoplastic material called filament. The MakerSpace exclusively uses Polylactic acid (PLA) filament which we provide for prints. PLA is not food safe. Customers must use the filament provided.
No, you may only use library provided PLA filament.
An STL file is the most common and best type of file to use for 3D printing models.
The printer's maximum build volume is 9.84 in x 8.3 in x 8.6 in (250 mm x 210 mm x 220 mm). All prints must fit within this volume or be altered to fit.
Print duration varies based on print size, design level of detail and overall complexity. Small to medium size prints will often take 1-3 hours to print.
Yes, you must be present for the duration of the print.
3D prints are subject to failure due to a large number of factors. MakerSpace staff do their best to prevent failed prints but cannot guarantee success. DPL assumes no responsibility for failed prints. The customer is responsible for monitoring the print for the duration of the printing process.
Yes. You may use library computers to design a 3D model using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Tinkercad is a free, web-based program designed to help people getting started with CAD. You can make a design and export it as an STL file for 3D printing.
Yes. The MakerSpace stocks a variety of filament colors. Specific filament color availability is not guaranteed.
The Prusa MK4 printers in the MakerSpace support single color printing only.
