This is the first time I have tried to make a quilt inspired by a book. I found
the process challenging. The book,
Kapitoil, by Teddy Wayne, contains such a variety
of ideas, images, and words that it was a problem to choose just one. Finally I
focused on one theme which is found throughout the book. Karim’s mother, whose death
greatly affected him, sang him a song by the Beatles when he was a child. That song,
Julia, is finally identified near the end of the book, and one line from that song
became the inspiration for my quilt. “ . . . Her hair of floating sky is shimmering,
glimmering, In the sun . . .” I chose background colors of blue and tan from photographs
of Qatar and the image of a woman using metallic thread and beads to capture the
shimmering and glimmering of her hair.
