Artificial intelligence technologies are distinct from other technologies in various ways. Unlike traditional tools and machines such as hammers, lathes, or bulldozers, AI is designed to enhance aspects beyond our mere physical abilities, hence the term "intelligence." This raises questions about its impact on our creative, cognitive, reasoning, and meaning-making capacities as a species. During this presentation Ramón Alvarado, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Data Ethics, will delve into these questions from a philosophical standpoint.

Ramón Alvarado is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oregon where he teaches courses on the ethics of technology, the internet society and philosophy, the philosophy and ethics of AI, data ethics, and critical thinking. His areas of specialty are AI Ethics, Data Ethics, Epistemology of Computer Simulations and Philosophy of Computation. In short, he is interested in the philosophical implications of the design, development and deployment of computational methods and technologies in science and society.
