Thursday, October 06, 2022
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Location
Redmond
Description
Explore the Redmond Caves and learn ancient history of the land.

This is an in-person program. Registration is required. Space is limited. Registration closes Sunday, October 2.

Pat Grady, staff archaeologist for the University of Oregon, will talk about the work that the University of Oregon Archaeological Field School conducted in 2005 and 2006 at the Redmond Caves. We will stop at each of the five caves and talk about the archaeology of each, as well as do some exploring of their interiors. Pat will describe the cave complex in relation to the geology of the region, the physiographic provinces, and the First Nations that occupied and passed through the region. We will also spend some time talking about the history of the caves from the 1920s until today in terms of their rediscovery, early use, and artifact collection.

Participants should bring a flashlight or headlamp, sturdy, close-toed shoes, cool weather clothing, and a brimmed hat or helmet (bike helmets work well!).
