This is an in-person program. Registration is required. Masks are required at all in-person library events.

Victoria Guthrie presents information about the importance of food in relation to black culture. Culturally, food points to pertinent historical information about people; where they came from, what they went through and the strength and creativity required to survive hardships. Soul food played a major role in shaping American cuisine and tells a colorful story about black history. This presentation will cover food-related terms and their ties to black culture. Join us as we discuss and take time to sample some authentic soul food. Remember, food is culture.

Hello all, my name is Victoria and I am a descendant of the Maroon tribes in Jamaica. My love for food began at a very young age as I learned about my family's slave history through foods such as ox tail stew and chicken feet soup. Spreading the word about the importance of food within culture continues to be a strong value of mine and a lifelong goal. Hopefully, Bend will become a city that encourages community connections through word of mouth stories of our ancestors over the sharing of food. Let's dream together.
