The beloved tradition of the Train Man at the Library continues...virtually.
Raised in the Midwest, Michael Lavrich learned early to love trains. His grandfather, a night hostler who tended three steam locomotives, encouraged his curiosity when they spent time together in the train yard. Michael pursued a degree in education and spent time teaching middle school in Georgia, kindergarten on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana before relocating to New Mexico and making a home with his family in house right next to a railroad. His interests in trains came full circle as he and his family started collecting toy trains.
Michael and his family moved to Bend just before the turn of this century when Bend was a booming metropolis of 35,000 souls. The noise and traffic were near unbearable after the small towns he'd lived in, but he found refuge in drives to the mountains and walks in Sunriver. As a lover of knowledge and books it didn't take long for Michael to discover the Sunriver Library, where he enjoyed story times with his daughter and son. Not soon after, Michael offered to set up a train display at the Library for Christmas and a tradition was born. Each year Michael spends days setting up his trains at the Downtown Bend Library for the community to enjoy.
