Downtown Bend: Writers Writing - Memoir As Collage

Wednesday, April 22, 2020
6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Downtown Bend Library
Brooks Room
In this writing workshop, consider memoir as a collage.

Memoir as a series of toasts to others: this is the novel idea of "When All Is Said" by Ann Griffin. But what about memoir as a collage? Beth Alvarado leads this memoir workshop in which you will examine the literary collage and how it lends itself to memoir, and why. Participants will generate images and scenes and descriptions - all the bits of memory that reflect a life - and connect them all together.

Bring a laptop if you can, but paper and pens will do.

Beth Alvarado's book, "Anxious Attachments," is a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards and was long-listed for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Art of the Essay Award. "Jillian in the Borderlands: A Cycle of Rather Dark Tales," is forthcoming in 2020. Her earlier books are "Anthropologies: A Family Memoir" and "Not a Matter of Love" (Many Voices Prize). Beth lives in Bend, where she is core faculty at OSU-Cascades Low Residency MFA Program. She has just been awarded an Oregon Literary Career Fellowship.
