The Roaring Twenties was a decade of growth and turbulence in Deschutes County.
The Roaring Twenties in Deschutes County is a decade of growth and turbulence. In a post-World War I world, the lumber industry soared while farmers found hardship and failed irrigation projects. Racial tensions surfaced as the KKK tried to establish a foothold in Central Oregon, and Japanese farmers met with resistance in Terrebonne. Prohibition reigned, and the county suffered its share of sensational crimes.
The Deschutes Public Library turns 100 years old in 2020! We celebrate our 100th anniversary with a new series of programs titled "Deschutes by the Decades." This series will explore and reflect upon Deschutes County's history through the last ten decades. In January, we begin with the Roaring Twenties. Join us as we explore this exciting decade and learn more about how the lumber industry soared, prohibition reigned, and racial tensions tore into our communities.
Although there has been tremendous change over these 100 years, the Deschutes Public Library's commitment and dedication to serve the residents and communities in Deschutes County has stayed steadfast.
