(November 7, 2001) The Deschutes Public Library will send accounts 60 days past due with fines worth $25.00 or more to a collection agency. This ensures library materials are returned so other patrons can use them and keeps the costs down on material purchases. The agency will begin the week of November 26.
"The library is committed to protecting its assets so we can better serve patrons and maintain good fiscal practices," said Library Director Michael Gaston. "The majority of our patrons are very responsible and return items in a reasonable time period or pay the fines. The collection agency comes into play for the more extreme cases of negligence."
Gaston explained that the collection agency is "fiscal neutral."
"There won’t be any expense to the library," said Gaston. "The irresponsible patrons are charged the collection fee of $10 which covers the library’s costs. The library remains fiscally neutral and library materials get back where they belong. It’s a win-win solution."
The library is offering a Fine-Free Week from Tuesday, November 13 through Wednesday November 21. Patrons are asked to return overdue items to a library in Bend, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver and the fines will be waived on the items returned. Please note that fines on previously returned items or lost items will not be waived
