"The grant monies have purchased Spanish language materials for children and adults," said Outreach Services Manager Jo Caisse. "The entire collection is available to all of the Deschutes Public Libraries in Bend, Redmond, La Pine, Sisters, and the Sunriver Area." According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated Hispanic population in 1998 was 3,481 residents, up 128% from the 1990 census which estimated the population to be 1,526. "We believed it was time to address the needs of this growing population," said Caisse. "We have translated our library card registrations into Spanish to make it easier for the Hispanic community to get a library card and are encouraged by the interest the Hispanic community has shown in using the library." The Spanish language collection will be unveiled on Monday, November 20 at all five libraries. The public is invited to check out the library’s newest collection.
