What's In A Wine?

Chris Oatman of Newport Avenue Market presents wine basics on Wednesday, January 28, at the Sisters Public Library at 6:00 p.m. Program participants must be at least 21.

Do you panic at the sight of a wine list? Is it syrah or Shiraz? Should you smell the cork? If wine and its etiquette are mysteries to you, don’t miss the opportunity to learn from an expert. “The relationship between wine and food is an important one,” says Oatman. “People should understand how wine is going to effect a meal or experience.” Oatman is passionate about breaking down what he calls “wine barriers.” People can be put off by the wide variety of wines available and the common misconception that you have to be a ‘wine snob’ to enjoy the beverage. “Wine doesn’t have to be intimidating. After all it is just fermented grape juice.” When you select a wine, Oatman suggests that you trust the people you buy from. “Let your palate guide you. If it tastes good, buy it!”

Oatman, who has been buying wine for Newport Avenue Market for five years, has been in the Hospitality business for 25 years. He has managed restaurants throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean. He tastes about 50 wines a week and continues his wine education by reading ten wine publications each month and attending the World Wine Market in San Francisco each year.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information about this or other library programs, please call 312-1032.
