Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome Tom Gilles of The Brew Shop for an introduction to beer making on Sunday, September 30 at 1:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.
For the past 15 years Gilles has been brewing his own beer. Now the owner of Bend’s Brew Shop, Gilles finds himself perfectly poised to share his passion for beer with others. Making beer can be taken to different levels, says Gilles. “You can buy simple kits, or you can use fresh ingredients.” From those two extremes and every step in between, Gilles says he loves the process. “It’s nice to be able to fine tune a beer I am making to my specific taste.”
Gilles says every beer has at least four things in common: water, yeast, hops and barley. From there things can get as fancy and complicated as a home brewer pleases. Gilles, a self proclaimed “hop-head,” is a fan of IPA style ales. “I love helping people get started home brewing. It’s rewarding and it tastes great!.” During his presentation Gilles will introduce the basic process of home brewing, discuss ingredients and offer tips about getting started home brewing.
This program is free and open to the public. For more information about this or other library programs, please call 312-1032.
