A Musical and Story-Telling Program with the Bowerman Brothers

To kick off this year's "A Novel Idea...Read Together" the Deschutes Public Libray Foundation is proud to present a lively musical and story-telling program with The Bowerman Brothers on Sunday, April 15th at 3:00 pm in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library. The program is free and open to the public and features Jon and Jay Bowerman, brothers, and sons of Bill Bowerman, the subject of this year's Novel Idea book selection, "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon."
Horse trainer, working cowboy, and poet, Jon Bowerman, who lives on a ranch located near Fossil, Oregon, is a natural born story-teller whose Western heritage dates back to the 1800's. As described in the book "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon" Jon Bowerman's great-grandfather, Thomas B. Hoover, founded the town of Fossil in 1876. His strong love for this area of Oregon and the connection to his family's history will provide the foundation for his storytelling at the Novel Idea kick-off event.
Jay Bowerman's acoustic band, Quincy Street, will provide the musical counterpoint to the stories of his brother Jon. Quincy Street is a 4-person acoustic band that plays Americana, folk, and bluegrass, and selects from a mix of traditional and original material. Jay Bowerman, who plays banjo and dobro, is joined by Eric Alexander on guitar, Marlene Alexander on the string bass, and Loren Irving, who plays mandolin and harmonica. For the Novel Idea event, the band will be focusing on songs from the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival in Fossil that reflect the geographic area and its people.
Now in its fourth year, "A Novel Idea...Read Together" has become the premier community reading program in Oregon. This month-long reading and discussion event is organized by the Deschutes Public Library and funded by the Deschutes Public Library Foundation with the support of other community sponsors. The purpose of the event is to build community by broadening and deepening appreciation of literature through reading, participation, and discussion.
The 2007 selected book, "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon", describes the life of Bill Bowerman, the University of Oregon's legendary track coach and founder of Nike. The book celebrates the spirit of Oregon through the life of this incredible man who faced life with genius, humor and grit. Author Kenny Moore, a former senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a world-class runner under Bowerman's tutelage, delivers a fully realized portrait of Bowerman.
