Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome University of Oregon professor Gordon Sayre, who will present a lecture on the founding of New Orleans. The program begins at 2:00 pm in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library on February 25th and is free and open to the public.
Professor Sayre will include French maps and documents to look at the founding of New Orleans in 1718 and the first couple decades of the capitol city of French Louisiana. He'll discuss how the same problems that afflict New Orleans today, such as floods, crime and racial tensions, were also problems in the past. But although the city has problems, Sayre says that, "its charms: food, music, and a certain rebellious, independent spirit" were also part of its history.
