Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome author Joe Kurmaskie to the Bend Public Library on Thursday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. for a multi media performance that includes monolog, Q&A, gear give aways, digital slides and a display of bike gear. This program is free and open to the public.

Described by the Beacon Journal as “David Sedaris trapped in Lance Armstrong’s body,” Kurmaskie’s third book, Momentum Is Your Friend, is the tale of one summer spent biking across America with his two boys. For the 4,000 mile ride, Kurmaskie’s seven-year old son, Quinn rode a tagalong bike, while 5-year old Enzo rode in a bike trailer. With no support crew, except for the periodic kindness of strangers, Kurmaskie pedaled hundreds of pounds of gear and children over mountain passes, wide plains, and through thunderstorms. Along the way they encountered grizzly bears, bison, bad traffic, monstrous RVs and a variety of characters of the human sort. By the time the trio reached Washington D.C. Kurmaskie had discovered what it meant to be a dad.

Kurmaskie is the author of two bestselling story collection, Metal Cowboy and Riding Outside The Lines. He has written for Backpacker, Bicycling, Details and Men’s Journal. All book sales benefit Camp Creative, a nonprofit Arts and Expedition summer camp founded by Kurmaskie.
