Deschutes Public Library is pleased to host the monthly Second Sunday Readings on Sunday, June 11, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. The monthly readings are the result of the efforts of local writers and poets who felt the need to gather to share their work and their love of writing. Each month has a focus and a featured reader. The gatherings end with an open mic time where anyone willing can share original pieces.
This month’s featured reader is Ellen Waterston. Waterston, who earned her Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and Master’s degree from the University of Madagascar, has published essays, short stories and poems in 27 different journals and anthologies and reviews. Her memoir, Then There Was No Mountain, was selected by the Oregonian as one of the top ten books in 2003, and earned her an appearance on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer in 2004. Her chapbook of poetry, I Am Madagascar, was published in 2004 by Ice River Press and awarded the WILLA Prize in Poetry in 2005. She is the author of two children’s books, Barney’s Joy and Tea At Miss Jean’s.
Waterston is the recipient of eight writing residency fellowships, including a 2004 Ucross residency and the Fishtrap Writer In Residence in 2005. In 2003, she received the Special Literary Fellowship for Women Writers given by Oregon’s Literary Arts, Inc. She is the founder of the Writing Ranch and is director of The Nature of Words, an annual literary event each November that brings nationally recognized authors and poets for readings and workshops to Bend. Her essay PauMau took second place in this year’s Oregon Quarterly competition and another selection was recently anthologized in HerStory. Seven of her poems will appear this summer in Drinking The Moon, from Ooligan Press.
On June 11, Waterston will read an excerpt from her novel-in-progress, a prose poem, and one of her recent award-winning essays. I Am Madagascar, Herstory and Then There Was No Mountain will be available for sale. Information on the Writing Ranch and The Nature of Words will also be available.
