You are cordially invited to George and Martha's for fun, games, and an evening of love gone wrong at the February installment of Deschutes Public Library’s Library Theater screening on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Admin Conference Room at 507 NW Wall Street in Bend. This program is free and open to the public.
Mike Nichols, director of successful Broadway hits Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple, made his filmmaking debut with the screen adaptation of Edward Albee’s taboo shattering play starring real life on again, off again couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. By far their finest film together, Burton and Taylor play a New England couple who’s disintegrating marriage hangs by the fragile threads of self-deception, vicious verbal jousting and dysfunctional need. For Taylor’s depiction of the shrewish wife, Martha, she earned a best actress Academy Award in 1966. George Segal and Sandy Dennis (who also won an Oscar for best supporting actress) play the younger, unsuspecting couple who awkwardly witness the devastating rivalry of their hosts during an evening dinner party.
