Deschutes Public Library welcomes Raja S. Tanas, Ph.D, for a series highlighting the Middle East. On Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Admin Conference Room, Dr. Tanas presents “The Palestinian-Israel Conflict: 1897-Present.” This program is a follow up to his program last year titled “Who Is Who and What Is What In the Middle East.” On Thursday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunriver Area Library, Dr. Tanas offers a repeat of the “Who Is Who and What Is What In the Middle East,” program. Both programs are free and open to the public.

Dr. Tanas, a professor of Sociology at Whitworth College since 1983, offers expert and personal insight into the complex and sometimes confusing region of the Middle East. At the Bend program, Tanas offers a framework for understanding the 56-year old Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The focus of the program is on the events that took place immediately before and after WWI including the creation of the State of Israel in Palestine in 1948. The Sunriver program presents an overview of Middle Eastern society with attention to its geography, history, and composition. Special attention is given to the rise of Islam in the seventh century to present, the rise and demise of the Arab and Ottoman Empires (632-1924 A.D.) and breakup up of the Middle East region into the current state system by the colonial powers.
