Stephen Fitzgerald of the OSU Extension Service shares tips for fire resistant landscaping on Saturday, April 26th at 2:00 pm in the Brooks Room at the Bend Public Library.

“Fire resistant landscaping is important because we live in a fire environment,” says Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, who earned a B.S. in Forestry from Syracuse University and a M.S. degree in Forest Resource Management from the University of Idaho, has worked for the Oregon State University Extension Service for 20 years. He is also an assistant professor and the area extension forester for the Central Oregon region.

“Fire resistant landscaping is easy and not much different than other types of landscaping,” states Fitzgerald. “It’s how you landscape the types of plants you use that is important.” With several hundred homes lost last year in wildfires, Fitzgerald sites creating a defensible space as the most important tool in fire resistant landscaping. “A defensible space not only adds beauty and variety, but it reduces the fuel problem around the home.” Learn more landscaping techniques and tips to help defend your home during the wildfire season.
