COCC Art Professor Presents Jesus and Mary In Art Programs

Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome Michael Wonser, Art professor at COCC for two presentations titled, “Jesus and Mary in Art.” Wonser will be at the Redmond Public Library on Saturday, December 2, and at the Sunriver Area Public Library on Sunday, December 3. Both programs begin at 2:00 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
Wonser received his undergraduate and Graduate education at the University of Oregon finishing in the mid-1960’s and began his college teaching career at Central Oregon Community College teaching part-time in the art department. After nearly 25 years as Professor of Fine Arts at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, Wonser returned to his home town of Bend, Oregon where he grew up and is presently teaching art history at Central Oregon Community College. While at Adams State College, Wonser taught undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from painting and design to art history and photography, his primary specialties. Wonser has maintained an extensive exhibition schedule throughout with his painting and photography and is, and has been, represented by galleries throughout the southwest and northwest.
Wonser’s presentation will take a look at how the Mother and Christ child have been portrayed throughout the history of Christianity from 5th C Byzantine / Early Christian, culminating with Michelangelo’s Pieta and how and why he created the marble masterpiece admired by peoples throughout the world since 1500.
