Chayag Performance

Tuesday, August 8, 2017 • 7:00 p.m. • Redmond Library | 827 SW Deschutes Avenue, Redmond

Wednesday, August 9, 2017 • noon • Downtown Bend Library | 601 NW Wall Street, Bend

Chayag—an Andean folk music and dance group—will lead bamboo flute workshops and demonstrate Andean music and dance at the Redmond and Downtown Bend Libraries. The workshops and performances are free, however space is limited and registration is required for the flute-making workshop.

Chayag means to arrive in Quichua, the indigenous language of the Incas. The group has been sharing and preserving the ancestral music, dance and culture of the indigenous people of the Andes for more than 20 years.

Chayag’s performance at the Redmond and Downtown Bend Libraries reflects their most current project, Chayag en Familia, or Chayag Family. The project continues decades of work by Alex Llumiquinga to present an engaging interpretation of traditional Andean rhythms to delight audiences of all ages. The performance includes traditional instruments, such as charango, zampoña, bombo and cajón), as well as colorful traditional and interpretive dances.

The group will lead a bamboo flute-making workshop prior to both performances. The flute workshops are for age 10 up and require pre-registration; registration for the Redmond Library workshop can be made here, and registration for the Downtown Bend Library workshop can be made here. No registration is required for the music and dance performances.
