Library Board of Directors

The Deschutes Public Library Board is comprised of five elected members who represent the five communities served by the Deschutes Public Library -- Bend, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver Area.

Cynthia Claridge

Cynthia Claridge

Cynthia has been an active library supporter since moving to Redmond in 1979. As a former member of the Redmond Library Board, she worked to unite all libraries in Deschutes County as the Deschutes Public Library District. She also served on the Redmond building committee in 1996 to establish the Redmond Library in its current location. Cynthia and her husband delight in visiting their eight grandchildren and when not with family, they enjoy hiking and exploring the beautiful state of Oregon.

Library Affiliation: Member of the Deschutes Public Library District Board and Novel Idea Community Nominating Committee. Past member of the Redmond Library Board and Redmond building committee.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Oregon State University (1972); Reading Endorsement certificate from Lewis & Clark College (2000)

Current Occupation: Retired.

Previous Occupation: Co-owner Paulina Springs Bookstore in Redmond, Elementary School Teacher at Evergreen Elementary, founder of cooperative pre-school in Redmond.

Organizations: Court Appointed State Advocate, past member of Downtown Redmond Merchants Association.

Ann Malkin

Ann Malkin

Ann has lived in Central Oregon for more than 40 years and has been an active supporter of libraries since the mid-1990s, when she worked on the campaigns to establish the Deschutes Public Library District and pass the bond issue to build the Bend Public Library. She was named Library Supporter of the Year for 2012 by the Oregon Library Association. Ann was appointed by the governor to serve a third term on the State Library of Oregon board in 2022 after serving as board chair from 2017 to 2021.

Library Affiliation: Member of the Deschutes Public Library District Board since 2007, serving as president from 2009–11, 2013–14, 2018–20, and 2021–2023. Board member and past president of the Deschutes Public Library Foundation, where she was instrumental in creating the popular A Novel Idea and Author! Author! literary programs. Past member of the Bend Library Advisory Council, Bend Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Bend Library, and COCC Visiting Scholar Committee.

Education:  B.A. in Journalism from the University of Oregon (1974).

Current Occupation:  Independent technical communications consultant to the biotechnology industry.

Previous Occupation:  Director of Communications for Bend Research, Inc.; Development Director for the Stanislaus (CA) County Library System; reporter and editor for The Bulletin.

Memberships:  Member of the American Library Association and Oregon Library Association

Ray Miao

Ray Miao

Ray was born in China and moved to the United States when his father accepted a position with the United Nations. Ray had a career in cancer research and business development. He was the Volunteer State President of AARP Oregon. He has served on several boards including the Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 , Council on Aging of Central Oregon, Oregon State Library and Oregon Health Fund Board. Ray and his wife Chris have lived in Central Oregon since 1991. They enjoy gardening, bird watching and traveling.

Anne Ness

Anne Ness

Anne was born and raised in Colorado and has lived in several states and Japan. She and her husband moved to Central Oregon in 2018 after living in the Portland area for 23 years. Anne retired from a 30 year teaching career in the field of special education. She is a fused glass hobbyist and enjoys traveling, hiking, cross country skiing and biking with her husband.

Library Affiliation: Past member of the Friends of the Bend Library

Education: Bachelor of Arts in Special Education, Masters of Arts in Educational Therapy

Current Occupation: Retired

Previous Occupation: Special Education teacher in Colorado, Utah, Illinois, Michigan and Oregon

Bunny Thompson

Bunny_Thompson

Bunny and her husband have lived in Sisters since 2001. She is an engineer by trade and worked with NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston helping to design the original Space Station as an ExtraVehicular Activity (EVA) specialist working with astronauts. But she has always gravitated to books, libraries and words. She was a freelance writer for over 20 years writing for national magazines. After retiring and moving to Sisters, she began working at Paulina Springs Books in Sisters. She was a founding member of Sisters Science Club, president of Friends of Sisters Library, and currently volunteers for Oregon Adaptive Sports. When not involved in her volunteer efforts, you’ll find her in the mountains skiing, or hiking, canoeing and exploring all of Oregon’s wild spaces.

Library Affiliation: Member and President, Friends of Sisters Library; volunteer and organizer of library services at various schools in Texas

Education: Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering, Master of Science in Environmental and Solar Engineering

Current Occupation: Retired.
