As part of a month-long series of programs on the classics, the Deschutes Public Library is pleased to present “The Relevance of Emily Dickinson” by COCC professor Chris Rubio. This presentation will take place on Sunday, January 29^th at 1:00 p.m. at the Sisters Public Library. This event is free and open to the public.

Few readers might choose to pick up a volume of Emily Dickinson’s poems on their own, wondering what relevance the words of a 19^th century poet could have on readers in this 21^st century. Yet the messages explored in Emily Dickinson’s poetry remain relevant today, even to Central Oregonians. Join us for an examination of some of the themes in Emily Dickinson’s poetry—nature, gardening, life, love, time, and death—for a new appreciation of the work of a poet who lived so long ago but wrote on topics many of us regularly think about in our lives today.

Chris Rubio is an Assistant Professor of English at Central Oregon Community College where she has taught since 2009. Before moving to Central Oregon, she taught for over 20 years at American River College in California. A few years ago she checked off an item on her bucket list: visiting Emily Dickinson’s home in Amherst, MA.
