As part of the Celebrate Oregon Author Series, the Deschutes Public Library System is proud to present an afternoon with Portland author Brian Doyle.  The reading will be held on October 10^th at 4:00 p.m. in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library.  This event is free and open to the public.

 Doyle is the author of nine books: five collections of essays, two nonfiction books (The Grail, about a year in an Oregon vineyard, and The Wet Engine, about “the mysteries and miracles of the heart”, and two collections of poems, most recently Thirsty for Joy: Australian & American Voices.  A collection of essays called Grace Notes will appear in 2010.

Brian Doyle’s book “The Grail” chronicles a year spent at Lange Winery, located in the hills of Dundee, Oregon in the Willamette Valley.  Doyle follows Jesse Lange, son of Lange Winery founder Don Lange, soaking up the rhythms and cycles of winemaking, and discovering the intensity of the labor and energy involved in creating the perfect pinot noir.  Publisher’s Weekly writes “Like the wine Doyle writes of, these recollections are layered with subtlety and depth…Perfect for wine aficionados and word lovers, this is a full-bodied, ebullient account.”  (starred review).

Brian Doyle’s books have four times been finalists for the Oregon Book Award.  He is the editor of Portland Magazine at the University of Portland, and the author of nine books.  His work has appeared in The Best American Essays, and in Atlantic Monthly, American Scholar, Harper’s, Gourmet, Orion, Sydney Morning Herald, and the Times of London.
