This month the Art Envy series will look at the American painter Jackson Pollack.  Participants in this monthly workshop will enjoy a 20-minute presentation on the life and work of Jackson Pollack, and then get creative in a 45-minute outside splatter painting workshop taught by local artist Paula Bullwinkel.  The workshop will take place at the Sisters Public Library on Monday, July 23rd at 6:00 p.m.  You can register through the calendar section of the library’s website at www.dpls.us/cal or by calling Lisa at 312-1034.  Supplies are provided and this program is free and open to the public.

Jackson Pollack was an influential American Painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.  Pollack is most widely known for his unique splatter and paint pouring techniques.  This technique combined the movement of his body, over which he had control, the viscous flow of paint, the force of gravity, and the absorption of paint into the canvas.  Art critics were divided, some saying “This is not art—it’s a joke in bad taste” and others saying Pollack’s paintings were “a culmination of the Western tradition”.

Local Bend artist Paula Bullwinkel has a master’s degree in art education with a minor in painting.  She has participated in numerous one-woman and group shows in New York City and the East Coast area.  For 18 years, she was a professional fashion and portrait photographer for Magazines in NYC and London.  Paula believes artmaking is best approached with a willingness to take risks, and a keen attitude towards the enjoyment of invention.
