This month the Art Envy series will look at the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt.  Participants in this monthly workshop will enjoy a 20-minute presentation on the life and work of Gustav Klimt, and then get creative in a 45-minute painting workshop taught by local artist Paula Bullwinkel.  The workshop will take place at the Redmond Public Library on Monday, May 11^th at 11:00 a.m.  You can register through the calendar section of the library’s website at www.dpls.us/cal or by calling Lisa at 312-1034.  Supplies are provided and this program is free and open to the public.

Gustav Klimt’s major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects.  Klimt’s primary subject was the female body.  His “Golden Phase”, where many of his paintings utilized gold leaf, was marked by positive critical reaction and success.  His most well-known works from this period are “The Kiss” (1907) and the “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I”.  Klimt’s paintings have brought some of the highest prices recorded for individual works of art.  In 2006, the 1907 “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” was purchased for $135 million dollars, the highest reported price ever paid for a painting.

Local Bend artist Paula Bullwinkel has a master’s degree in art education with a minor in painting.  She has participated in numerous one-woman and group shows in New York City and the East Coast area.  For 18 years, she was a professional fashion and portrait photographer for Magazines in NYC and London.  Paula believes artmaking is best approached with a willingness to take risks, and a keen attitude towards the enjoyment of invention.
