Spend an hour with Reese Shepard at the Redmond Public Library on Friday, June 27th at 12:00 noon planning your for your retirement. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch.
“Most people spend fewer than 10 hours in their lifetime planning for their retirement,” says Certified Financial Planner Reese Shepard. “They spend that much time each year planning a summer vacation even though retirement lasts longer!” Shepard, who first began working on Wall Street in 1966, holds an economics degree from Harvard and a MBA from Stanford. He moved to Bend in 1984 to start COCC’s Business Development Center and has been in the financial services industry in Bend for the past ten years. “The most important tip for having enough for retirement is to set aside money now such that you don't spend it, don't lose it, and have a reasonable chance of growing it,” says Shepard. He volunteers his time at the Deschutes Public Libraries, leading the monthly Financial Friday series, which occurs the fourth Friday of every month.
“The sooner you start to plan, the better, says Shepard. He believes thirty years before retirement may be the best time to start retirement planning. If you are uncomfortable about the planning you’ve done, don’t be discouraged. “Even five years past your retirement date, you may still be able to improve your situation,” states Shepard. “The more time you have to make up a retirement deficit, the easier it is to accomplish.”
