Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

Join the Deschutes Public Library as we recognize the heritage of the Hispanic community with a full month of programs and activities. This is part of a national period that celebrates the cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th. This period was chosen for this celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of eight separate Latin American countries.

Visit the DPL Hispanic Heritage Month page for a full list of events and programs.

All programs are free and open to the public. Program times, dates, and locations are subject to change. Check times at your local library or at www.deschuteslibrary.org/calendar.

Changes to Your Library Account and Courtesy Notices

Library Offers Free and Convenient Methods to Access Customer Accounts

Courtesy mailers will be discontinued as of October 1, 2010

As of October 1st 2010, the Deschutes Public Library will no longer mail courtesy print notices to alert customers of holds, due dates, and fines. The Library realized by eliminating this courtesy service, it would save more than $22,000 annually.

“We have several options available for customers to access their account information that is more timely and cost-effective,” said Circulation Manager Holly McKinley. “Only 2% of our customer base currently receives the courtesy printed mailers, so we’re hoping the impact won’t be too severe on our customers. And, it saves the Library a substantial amount of money.”

According to McKinley there are several ways to access your library account information that are free and easy to use:

1. Email: Sign up for email notification with the Library and you will receive timely notices multiple times with information about items on hold, late items, when items need to be returned, etc. If you currently do not have an email account, you can look into taking a free email class at the Library or ask for specific help at a public service desk in your local branch.

2. Phone: If you currently have a local 541 number from any of our service areas in Bend, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver you may sign up for phone notification. The phone notification is timely but less frequent than email. Remember the 541 area code must be local -- Madras & Klamath are long distance.

3. Online: Online access to your account is available 24/7 from home, work, or the Library computers. We are happy to assist you with finding your account information online. Follow the instructions on our website: http://catalog.dpls.lib.or.us/screens/help_index.html or call the Library for more assistance at 541-617-7050.

4. Automated phone: You can access the automated phone line by calling 541-617-7050 and select option 1 to renew materials and find all of your account information. You will need your library card number located on the back of the card along with the barcode number of the items you have checked out.

5. Staff Assistance: Our friendly staff is always available to assist at any customer service desk in your local library or call 541-617-7050 option 2 for assistance from home or work.

For more information, please contact Library Services Manager Holly McKinley at 541-617-7045 or Deschutes Public Library Staff at 541-617-7050 option 2.

Training and Talking to Your Dog

Mare Shey, CPDT, Founder/Owner of Dancin’ Woofs Compassionate Dog Training & Daycare, LLC will offer two programs at the Bend and Sunriver Area Public Libraries as part of the “Know Dog” series. Mare will be at the Bend Library on August 25 at 6:30 sharing “Top 10 Dog Training Tips,” at the Sunriver Area Library on September 7 at 6:30 discussion “How To Talk To Your Dog.”

According to Shey, a good relationship between a dog and its owner is based on clear communication and quality time spent together learning about each other, our daily needs, and what is unique about how we understand the world around us. “At Dancin Woofs our goal in training is to help humans understand how to bond with dogs and puppies through developing these necessary communication skills.” Shey has seen owners make plenty of mistakes when it comes to dog training. “The biggest mistake that I often see is people trying to communicate with dogs as they would talk with each other.” She says that a few simple strategies to shift communication so that dogs understand what is being asked of them can really make a difference. Shey believes that dogs make us feel special when we walk through the door and remind us that we are missed. “Dogs provide companionship without judgment, offer humor in some of the most interesting ways, listen without needing to tell their story, and remind us that playing is of utmost importance.”

Shey’s love, appreciation and training of dogs spans over 30 years and includes basic through advanced obedience, agility, behavioral counseling, service dog and Pet Partner training. As a national and international conference speaker and Dog Daycare Business consultant, Shey has brought leading edge concepts and ideas into the business world and pet care industry. Her volunteer time is spent teaching and evaluating Pet Partner dogs for the Compassionate Canines of Central Oregon dog teams who bring therapy programs into our schools and community.

For more information about the “Know Dogs” series or other library programs, call 541/312-1032.
Build Your Own Dog House

Tired of the family dog taking up space on your bed? Maybe Rover needs his own space! Learn how to build your own dog house at the Redmond Public Library on Sunday, August 22 at 1:00 and at the Bend Library on September 11 at 1:00 during the “Know Dogs” series being offered during August and September at Deschutes Public Libraries. Local retired contractor, Fred Olson, will be demonstrating the techniques required to construct a dog house. Following the demonstration, the house will be raffled off to a program participant. The programs are free and open to the public.

Olson has led do it yourself programs at the library for the past two years. “The dog house is a simple, cost efficient, practical, shelter for dogs,” says Olson. The project is appropriate for beginners and uses easy to find material and simple skills. “You don’t even need power tools,” says Olson. “But an electric screw driver and circular saw make the project much easier.” Besides doing library presentations, Olson works with his dog, Sir Jeffrey, who is a registered therapy dog.

For more information about this or other library programs, please visit the library website at www.deschuteslibrary.org.
