“Know Cultura” throughout October at Deschutes Public Library

Know Cultura
Immerse yourself in the rich and diverse world of Hispanic and Latin American culture at Deschutes Public Library in October. This month-long celebration invites people of all backgrounds to “Know Cultura” through presentations and hands-on classes at their local library.

All programs are free and open to the public; sugar skull-making programs, as indicated, are intended for youth and teens.

Programs with an asterisk (*) feature a bilingual presenter; programs with two asterisks (**) are presented in a bilingual format.

Know Cultura: Carnaval!**
Un evento familiar, uniendo culturas. Tendremos juegos, manualidades, bocadillos, y sorpresas para nuestros hijos. A family event uniting cultures, games, crafts, snacks and surprises!

Second Sunday with Ivonne Saed*
Writer and photographer Ivonne Saed reads from her work and discusses the creative process. Saed’s published work includes the novel Triple crónica de un nombre, which is currently in translation to English (Triple Chronicle of a Name.)

Know Cultura: Making Mole*
Sometimes called the “curry of Mexico,” mole sauce has a reputation for being time consuming, labor intensive and requiring a plethora of ingredients. COCC instructor Robin Martinez talks about the history of mole and leads a demonstration of how to make mole at home.

Know Cultura: Traditional Music and Instruments of Latin America*
Spend an hour with Chilean professor/musician Freddy O. Vilches and friends as they celebrate the history of Latin America through music. Freddy will talk about the rich musical traditions and instruments of Latin American, incluing the quena, zampoñas, charango, cuatro, maracas, güiros, Bongos, and claves.

Know Cultura: Making Salsa*
Salsa long ago surpassed ketchup as the top-selling condiment in the United States. But salsa can be used for much more than a chip cip, and it has a rich history going back as far as 3000BCE. Join COCC instructor Robin Martinez as she explores the history of salsa while also demonstrating how easy it is to make at home.

Know Cultura: Day of the Dead & Titlakawan*
Explore the history and the practice of Day of the Dead (Dia de los muertos) with Willan Cervantes, COCC’s Latino College Prep Coordinator. Cervantes will provide a brief history of the holiday as well as lead participants through the building of a typical alter. The program concludes with a performance by Titlakawan, a traditional Aztec group that preserves movements and rituals.
