Celebrate Oregon Authors The Deschutes Public Library celebrated Oregon’s 150th Birthday by hosting the “Celebrate Oregon Authors” series from February 2009 through December 2009.

Beginning in February, the Library selected a different Oregon author each month to honor and celebrate. The highlighted author’s books were available in displays at each of the local Library’s across Deschutes County. Programs surrounding the author’s work were organized throughout the month. And, a visit from the author occured during the month for a great discussion and book signing. All programs were free and open to the public.

February Ken Kesey – author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sometimes A Great Notion, Sailor Song, Demon Box, The Sea Lion: Story of the Sea Cliff People.

Author is deceased.

March Molly Gloss – author of Jump Off Creek, The Dazzle of Day, Outside the Gates, Wild Life, and her most recent novel Hearts of Horses.

Molly Gloss will visit Deschutes County on Saturday, March 14 at the Bend Public Library and Sunday, March 15 at the Redmond Public Library.

April Part of the Oregon Reads 2009 series -- Lauren Kessler – author of Stubborn Twig, After All the Years, Full Court Press, The Happy Bottom Riding Club, Clever Girl, and Dancing with Rose.

Lauren Kessler will visit on Thursday, April 23 at the Bend Public Library for a public reception, on Friday, April 24 at the Tower Theatre, and Saturday, April 25 at the Sisters Library at noon.

May John Daniel – author of Rogue River Journal, The Trail Home, Looking After, Oregon Rivers, Winter Creek, Wild Song, All Things Touched by Wind, and Common Ground.

John Daniel will speak and sign books on May 2, at the Sunriver Public Library and on May 3 at the Bend Public Library.

June Barry Lopez – author of Arctic Dreams, Apologia, Vintage Lopez, Light Action in the Caribbean, Resistance, Winter Count, River Notes, Of Wolves and Men, Crow and Weasel, Crossing Open Ground, Lessons from the Wolverine, Field Notes, The Rediscovery of North America, and About this Life.

Barry Lopez will speak and sign books on Thursday, June 11 at the Bend Public Library.

July Katherine Dunn – author of Geek Love, Guyana, Near Flesh, The Allies, 3 Day Fox: A Tattoo, Truck, Attic, The Book of Slice: Information with an Attitude, Why Do Men Have Nipples.

Katherine Dunn will visit Deschutes County on July 15.

August Ursula K. Le Guin – author of Lavinia, The Lathe of Heaven, The Eye of the Heron, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Alchemy of Stars, The Wave in the Mind, Earth Sea novels and short stories series, Always Coming Home, Catwing, Tom Mouse, Gifts, Voices, Powers, and several other poems, short stories, essays, non-fiction, and fiction titles.

Ursula K. Le Guin will speak and sign books on Saturday, August 1 at the Bend Public Library.

September Phillip Margolin is the author of Wild Justice, Proof Positive, and Fugitive and many others.

Phillip Margolin will speak on Friday, September 18th at the Bend Public Library and Saturday, September 19th at the Sisters Public Library

October The Poets of Oregon
The Deschutes Public Library is pleased to highlight several poets from across Oregon during the month of October with a series of programs and readings as part of the Celebrate Oregon Authors series being offered throughout the year of 2009.

November Peter Rock
Deschutes Public Library is pleased to highlight Peter Rock, author of four novels including the recently published, My Abandonment (Harcourt) and a story collection, The Unsettling, during the month of November with programs and readings as part of the Celebrate Oregon Authors series being offered through 2009.

Rock will be reading at the Bend Public Library on Saturday, November 14 at 3:00 pm and at the Sisters Public Library on Sunday, November 15 at 1:00 pm.

December Willy Vlautin
The Deschutes Public Library is pleased to highlight Oregon author Willy Vlautin during the month of December with programs and readings as part of the Celebrate Oregon Authors series being offered throughout the year of 2009. All events are free and open to the public.
